A Bit of History: Starting out his broadcast career at the ripe old age of 13 as an intern at WALE AM 1400 in Fall River, MA. This led to his “big break” which was covering a breaking news story in downtown Fall River of a hostage situation, which then led to his first paid gig: weekend news on WALE. During his time at WALE, he had the opportunity to work and learn from a number of great people, including Jim Manley, George Colajezzi, Bernie Sullivan, and Steve Sorel.
1400 was sold in 1989 to James and Robert Karam, and Marc was the person who had the chance to turn off the transmitter of WALE at 11 PM on July 19, 1989 with Gus Sunneson, and turn on the transmitter of WHTB AM 1400 with “Happy Hec” Gauthier at 0430 on July 20, 1989. With the sale came the chance for Marc to be a “designated hitter” of sorts, pretty much doing a variety of shifts and jobs, ranging from news to DJ to the occasional sports announcing (much to his chagrin…he wasn’t good at it at all.) He once again got the chance to work with those mentioned above, but also got the chance to work with other great mentors including John Greenwood, Richard Trieff, Mike Moran, Louise Mauro, Steve Klamkin, Paul Rogers, Bill Sylvia, Laurie Johnson, and PJ Carroll (just to name a few) at the quaint confines of 130 Rock Street in Fall River.
Despite a change in career when Lemay became an media assistant to Dr. Michele Merolla (and briefly moved to Taunton) he stayed with WHTB, working in a lesser capacity, but still got the chance to work such events as Fall River Celebrates America. Once that ran it’s course – Lemay would move back to Fall River, only to make the ultimate decision to make a move to the military – specifically the U.S. Navy. Well, the long and short of that was it wasn’t meant to be…however – as fate would have it – he would meet someone with connections to WHAV AM 1490 in Haverhill, MA. The Program Director (Brian Webster) just happened to be looking for a News Director. Lemay apparently fit the bill and made the move to Haverhill, MA.
After nearly three years of news in Haverhill (and taking a whack at a mid-morning talk show), Lemay would venture away from radio and head into a different media direction, working in print (Yellow Pages, newspaper publishing and graphic design), television (public access), Internet (self-employed) and full-time parent, all in the Boston area. A personal move would bring Lemay and his family back to Haverhill, where he would end up back on 1490, but this time with the WCCM call letters, hosting an afternoon drive oldies show working for Costa Eagle Broadcasting and the legendary Bruce Arnold as his Program Director and John Bassett as his Station Manager.
As with most positions in radio – it never stays the same. During his tenure at WCCM, Lemay served as Afternoon Drive Host, Production Director, IT Manager, Morning Show News Anchor/Co-host and finally Morning Show Host (solo) where he hosted “The Open Mic” in honor of former host and Haverhill City Councilor Bill Pike. In Lemay’s words, “That was fun!”
